I found the same assignment elsewhere, and the question is about the word hostess.
That italicized part of the sentence is indirect object. When you have a sentence with two objects, the rule is that the first one is going to be indirect (as is the case here - hostess is indirect object), and the second one is going to be direct (his coat is direct object).
