It hurt the populist party because it started losing power as people started switching to democrat support. Basically, Bryan was important for both the Democrats and the populists and both endorsed him. Since he became a major democratic candidate, democrats adopted numerous populist policies which they didn't have previously which took voters from populists and towards democratic support.
