There are 16 glasses, 7 are large and the rest are small

Since we assume the rest are small:
16 glasses - 7 glasses = 9 glasses left

Therefore 9 glasses are small
To find the number of small glasses you will have to subtract the large number of glasses by the total.

16 - 7 = 9 

So there are 9 small glasses.
