Oxidative phosphorylation is the process in which ATP is formed as a result of the transfer of electrons from NADH or FADH2 to oxygen by a series of electron carriers. The process takes place in the mitochondria and is the major source of ATP to the cells in aerobic organisms. In this process ATP synthase uses energy from proton gradient to produce ATP.
