You walk 48 m to the north, then turn 60° to your right and walk another 45 m. how far are you from where you originally started?

I drew the image that this problem gave me. Based on that image, I solved the required measurement using the sin theta formula:

sin θ = opposite / hypotenuse

On my drawing, I made an imaginary right triangle to solve for the distance.

Sin θ = opposite / hypotenuse

Sin(30) = opposite / 48m

Sin (30) * 48m = opposite

24m = opposite

 

Sin(30) = opposite / 45 m

Sin(30) * 45 m = opposite

22.5 m = opposite

 

24m + 22.5m = 46.5 m


I am 46.5m away from my original starting point.
