The 6 original yards plus the 2 1/3 yards make 8 1/3.

Then you subtract 6 5/6.     

 You can turn 1/3 to 2/6
and you have 8 2/6 - 6 5/6. 

You subtract the two numbers and get 1 3/6 which is also 1.5
