The tradition of wassailing is divided into two brackets: the house-visiting wassail and the orchard-visiting wassail. House-visiting wassail is when people go from door-to-door to sing and offer a drink from the wassail bowl in exchange for gifts. The orchard-visiting wassail is when people visit orchards to exclaim incantations and sing to trees to encourage good harvest for the coming year.
