Well the most interesting thing that has happened to the population is that is has massively expanded.

We have started to reproduce exponentially! In 1950s, there were only around 2,5 billion people! In the year 2000, there were already 6 billion people! This is probably the most important thing that has happened, as we have witnessed a huge surge in the amount of people who're alive.
