Do you think there were any points at which civil war might have been averted?

This is one of the most contentious debates in US history, but most believe the Civil War could never have been averted since as long as slavery existed or had the possibility to exist in new territories, the free states would have never been allowed to expand, which could only lead to physical conflict.
