I studied this story a little while back. The conflict that Della faces is the decisions she has to make to get a gift for her poor husband. In the story, it explains that her hair was the longest and most cared for in all of the lands, that even the queen would look poorer than her. She has to make the decision to sell her hair to get a chain for her husband's pocket watch.
