When America defeated Japan in WW2 the Japanese royal family was kept because the royal family was at the heart of Japanese culture and they practically worshiped the emperor like a god, if they removed the emperor there would of been stiff resistance and rebellion so keeping the emperor as a figurehead made occupation more stable.
