Actually, it is true that black codes sought to maintain white supremacy because the white southern politicians used laws to take away blacks' rights in order to continue to have control over the blacks and be the superior race in America.
They were passed in 1865 and 1866 by Southern states, after the American Civil War, in order to restrict African Americans' freedom, and to compel them to work for low wages.
