Because it was never written down. Each generation was never taught they learned from interacting with elders. So only a few knew how to speak and understand. so unless you had a native Navajo person you were out of luck. On top of that they didn’t have words for tank or airplane so they used a code inside the code so they just used something similar bird could be used for airplane and bear could be used for tank
