Why were the Southern States concerned with the extension of slavery in the new territories?

Answer.  Southerners wanted slavery extended to the new territories so the south could keep enough strength in the Senate to protect Southern interests (slavery). The North was better prepared economically to fight the Civil War. The North had the resources that enabled it to lead in production.
