Because of varnas priests represented the most important class in aryan society. Varna is the sanskrit word used for the classes of society. There were four of these classes: In order of importance in said society ( caste system) : Brahmin (priests); Kshatriya (warriors) ;Vaishya (artisans and labourers) and Shudra at the lowest.
