4x + y = 1
-2x - y = -8

2x = -7

x = -7/2

2(-7/2) + y = 8

-7 + y = 8

Answer: It is best solve using elimination method

Step-by-step explanation:

4x + y = 1 --------(1)

2x + y = 8---------(2)

subtract (2) from (1)

2x = -7

divide bothside by 2

2x/2 = -7/2

x= -7/2

we can substitute x = -7/2 in any of the equations.

Lets take equation (1)

4x + y = 1

4(-7/2) + y =1

2(-7) + y = 1

-14 + y = 1

y = 1+14

y =15
