The "NEW SOUTH" was a vision formed by southern
landowners, entrepreneurs, and newspaper editors in the decades following the
Confederacy's defeat in 1865. It argued for the development of a new economy
more in harmony with industrial capitalism that characterized the rest of the
American economy. This is because its plantation economy had been destroyed by
the Civil War and Reconstruction.
